Review – TT on the prom DVD
Starting off the Centennial Celebrations of the TT on the prom DVD is the TT Freestyle Stunt bike competition with clips of Mattie Tepsa entertaining the crowds while competing in the rain, followed by Mattie Griffen, Angyal Zoltan, Humberto Ribiero and Christian Pfeiffer who won the Championship performing some amazing stunts and tricks both on and off their bikes. It always amazes me how a bike can still be controlled without a rider in the saddle or even touching it and how these chaps can ride while sat the wrong way around is beyond me! Next is stunt driver Russ Swift parking a variety of cars in a ‘don’t try this on the road’ style! There’s plenty of smoke from burning rubber … or may be it was the engine retaliating! No wonder trials rider Steve Colley’s nickname is ‘Mr Showman’, he performed some amazing tricks on both one wheel and two wheeled bikes culminating in a new Guinness world record for 50 back wheel bounces which he only just appeared to do after struggling with those last few bounces but willed on by the support from the crowds, he made it! He makes riding off and over cars, transit vans etc look so easy.
I couldn’t grasp why the Free Runners were part of the entertainment for a biking event like the TT until they started tumbling off roofs and flipping over moving motor vehicles as part of their splendid acrobatic skills display and they make it look so easy too just as the Freestyle MX team did performing their acrobatic tricks high in mid air, while hanging on to the bars with one hand during their huge high leaps and the last of the team in this clip did a 360 degree back flip to the delight of the crowd. The Purple Helmets are another bunch of very skilled and clever entertainers as they made pyramids, raced dragging boxes, ski’s and the like, making everything look so easy including the ‘unrehearsed’ tumbles that some of them took and the camera caught for ‘posterity’!
I found the jet-powered quad, Pyromaniac, boring in some parts. I guess it’s one of the things you need to see live because the speed is lost somewhat when watched on film, but having said that, while he was just riding up and down what seemed like a real short track I sussed to watch the crowd rather than the quad, then I saw the speed this thing was going at which sparked my interest again but it was short lived as around half of the next part of his show was obliterated by smoke and he had finished doing his tricks by the time the smoke cleared. There was one amusing part in this clip, when he pulled a woman from the crowd and used some sort of remote control for his quad. There’s no commentary so I made up my own; he tells her to sit still and not touch anything. The quad blows smoke and …. Well you can guess the rest!
The last part of the DVD is given over to the old bikes and past TT winners and Geoff Cannell chats with some of the legends including Mick Grant who’s brought his restored the bike which he won the 1978 TT race on, Phil Read talked about his association with Yamaha and how in 1968 he took 2 seconds off the lap time. There were some great old bikes, which looked in fabulous condition for their age, and to see them running was a bonus. The 1907 bike started off the parade and apparently in those days you were allowed to use peddles so I was a bit puzzled as to why the rider let Sammy Miller push him off instead of using them. Some of the other bikes were a noisy Gilera 4, 500 which Phil Read rode, a Honda 250 which was like the one that Stewart Graham rode in 1966, a 2 stroke Kawasaki 3, 750 which Nick Grant had a ride on, a 1962 (ish) Honda 4, 250 which sounded and looked in wonderful condition. There’s a 125 single cylinder NSU and Geoff informs listeners that in those days a hotair machine was used to warm up the engines! A Norton started the parade and a Grindley Fearless in all its restored beauty purred it’s way around the track as last to parade.
A good DVD with something for every to watch from the nine evenings entertainment on the prom. On the whole I enjoyed this DVD and found it very entertaining, although I did feel that some of my time was being wasted while I watched a screen full of smoke. The running time at 45 minutes is just right too, so not too long to be bored and just long enough to be entertained.
