Buell’s Turbulent helmet – manufactured by AGV – has become one of only six helmets so far to gain the coveted five-star rating from the government’s new Safety Helmet and Assessment Rating Programme (SHARP). To date, the Department for Transport (DfT) appointed laboratory has tested 70 full face helmets, but many of the leading brands have failed to achieve the top grading.
The safety rating provided by SHARP is not a legal requirement but offers the UK’s motorcyclists an additional indicator of the level of protection provided by specific helmets. The process is ongoing and all helmets tested are purchased in the usual store transaction process that customers use to buy helmets.
Buell’s confidence in its products is already evident from the two-year warranty provided for all of its MotorClothes® and all Harley-Davidson and Buell helmets conform to current European Union Law (EC-2205). However, the five star rating given to the Buell Turbulent helmet is further testament to the quality of the products.

“The research also reinforces the benefits of buying products from an authorised UK or Ireland dealer. The strength of the pound to the dollar has seen some customers tempted to purchase products online from the US. However, by the time those products have cleared customs, the difference in pricing is negligible.
“The crucial points are that helmets bought in the US are not legal in the EU and the level of protection provided by UK dealers is far superior. We’re looking forward to receiving the ratings on our other helmets and hope that they can achieve the same level as the Buell Turbulent.”
